Recession hits Birmingham hardest, analysis reveals

Birmingham has had the biggest increase in the number of people claiming Job Seekers' Allowance according to a study on the areas hit worst by the recession.

The new analysis from The Work Foundation reveals there are 12,383 more claimants in the city than last year.

Senior researcher Naomi Clayton, who produced the paper The Geography of Unemployment: How the recession has affected different cities, warned policymakers not to ignore the results.

cctv-controlIf it wasn't for the curiosity of a member of the public, and the ability of most mobile phones to take videos, the incident involving a police officer hitting and pushing Tomlinson to the ground might never have surfaced. 

Sure, there may have been "eye witnesses" without the video evidence, but we all know how far that would have progressed if the enquiry was left in the hands of the police. Even with the Tomlinson incident, we are already seeing attempts to cover up the attack.

Jaguar Land Rover get £340m green loan package but is it enough?

Jaguar_Land RoverSTRUGGLING Jaguar Land Rover is to receive new funding of £340 million - but with strings attached as to how it spends the money.

The loan, from the European Investment Bank EIB), will be tied to the carmaker's plans to develop a new generation of "green" vehicles in order to cut emissions.

JLR met the EIB's criteria for the funding which was approved by the bank's directors meeting in Luxembourg yesterday (Tuesday). The loan has to be underwritten by the UK Government.

Birmingham chosen to pioneer Every Can Counts scheme

Drink_CansBirmingham has been chosen as the first city in the UK to launch an innovative workplace recycling scheme called Every Can Counts.

The scheme is designed to get workers to help to recycle the millions of drinks cans that are estimated to be consumed away from home every year.

Advantage West Midlands waste policy manager Tim Baldwin said: "We want Birmingham to lead the way in workplace recycling.

"Businesses can cut their waste management costs and their CO2 emissions by encouraging staff to recycle drinks cans.

Mark Speight's memory kept alive in art charity for children, says dad

THE Birmingham father of the late children's television presenter Mark Speight spoke today of his ambition to create the biggest artistic children's charity in Britain in memory of his "beautiful" son as he marked the first anniversary of his death.

Oliver Speight said there had been an outpouring of love from children and adults following his 42-year-old son's suicide by hanging at Paddington railway station in London in April last year.

The BBC SMart art show presenter had taken his life after he had been "devastated" by the drug-related death of his 31-year-old fiancee Natasha Collins months earlier.
